Entropion (Turned In Eyelid)

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid is rolled in and the eyelashes are rubbing against the surface of the eye. Entropion may be caused by a weakening in one of the muscles that holds the eyelid in place, creating an imbalance that pulls the eyelid toward the eye. This condition may be caused by aging, injury, disease or inflammation.   

• Eye pain
• Decreased vision
• Excessive tearing
• Eye infections
• Sensitivity to light and wind
• Mucus discharge
• Scratching and scarring of the cornea, if left untreated

Entropion must be corrected before permanent damage is done to the eye. Entropion surgery restores muscle balance in order to roll the eyelid back out into a normal position. Dr. Michael McCracken makes incisions hidden in the outer corner of the eye (“crow’s feet”) and inside of the eyelid. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and may be performed with local anesthesia in the office or in the operating room with IV sedation. Postoperative discomfort is minimal, and most patients can return to normal activities within a few days. Makeup and contacts can usually be worn after a week.
